Private Homeschool Educator / Academic Director
Location: Baltimore / Pikesville, Maryland
Position Type: Full-Time, In-Person
Compensation: Competitive, commensurate with experience
Position Overview
A Baltimore-area family is seeking an exceptional, experienced, and dedicated educator to lead the homeschooling education of two children, currently in elementary and middle school.
We are looking for someone who is passionate about education, understands the importance of developing the whole child, and believes that learning should inspire intellectual curiosity, independent thinking, strong character, and a lifelong love of knowledge.
Our children are currently enrolled in Laurel Springs School, an accredited online private school that provides their core academic curriculum. The selected educator will oversee and enhance their daily education, providing individualized instruction, academic enrichment, and a structured, engaging learning environment.
We are particularly interested in an educator who appreciates Jewish values and traditions and can help foster an environment that supports both academic excellence and personal development.
This is a unique opportunity for a talented teacher to move beyond the traditional classroom and make a meaningful, long-term impact on two children’s educational journeys.
Key Responsibilities
Academic Instruction and Oversight
Manage and support the children’s daily Laurel Springs coursework, including mathematics, English, science, social studies, and other core subjects.
Provide direct, individualized instruction tailored to each child’s learning style, academic abilities, and developmental needs.
Develop and maintain a structured daily and weekly academic schedule while allowing flexibility for deeper exploration and experiential learning.
Monitor academic progress, identify areas requiring additional attention, and ensure mastery of important concepts.
Communicate regularly with Laurel Springs teachers and academic advisors, as appropriate.
Academic Enrichment and Intellectual Development
Supplement the core curriculum with challenging and engaging educational activities.
Encourage critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and independent learning.
Incorporate hands-on projects, science experiments, STEM activities, reading, writing, and educational experiences.
Support the children’s individual interests and talents, including advanced learning opportunities where appropriate.
Cultivate strong study habits, personal responsibility, organizational skills, and intellectual confidence.
Jewish Values and Character Development
Help foster a learning environment grounded in strong moral character, kindness, respect, integrity, and personal responsibility.
Support the family’s Jewish values, traditions, and educational priorities.
Incorporate Jewish history, culture, Hebrew, or Judaic studies where appropriate and consistent with the educator’s background and qualifications.
Educational Planning and Family Communication
Develop individualized academic goals and learning plans for each child.
Maintain records of assignments, progress, and educational milestones.
Provide regular updates to parents regarding academic performance, achievements, and areas for improvement.
Coordinate educational field trips, enrichment activities, and supplemental learning opportunities.
Work collaboratively with the parents to ensure the children’s education reflects the family’s long-term educational goals.
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field.
Significant teaching experience, preferably at the elementary or middle-school level.
Strong proficiency in core academic subjects, particularly mathematics, English, and science.
Demonstrated ability to adapt instruction to different ages, learning styles, and academic levels.
Excellent communication, organizational, and classroom management skills.
A warm, patient, engaging, and intellectually curious personality.
Ability to work independently and take ownership of the children’s daily educational experience.
Strong professional references and willingness to complete a background check.
Preferred
Master’s degree in education or a related discipline.
Five or more years of classroom teaching experience.
Experience in Jewish day schools, private schools, gifted education, or individualized instruction.
Familiarity with online learning platforms or homeschool education.
Knowledge of Jewish traditions, Hebrew, or Judaic studies.
Interest or experience in STEM, robotics, project-based learning, or advanced academic enrichment.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is more than a traditional teacher. We are seeking a thoughtful educator and mentor who recognizes that every child has unique potential and takes genuine satisfaction in helping children discover and develop their abilities.
This individual should combine academic rigor with warmth, creativity, patience, and enthusiasm. They should be comfortable balancing a structured curriculum with opportunities for exploration, discussion, hands-on learning, and independent discovery.
Most importantly, we seek someone who will become a trusted educational partner to our family and play an important role in our children’s intellectual and personal development.
Compensation and Opportunity
We offer competitive compensation based on experience and qualifications, a supportive and well-resourced learning environment, and the opportunity to develop a meaningful, long-term educational relationship with our family.
The position offers the ability to focus on individualized instruction without the administrative demands and large class sizes of a traditional school environment.
