Reflecting on a Season of Joyful Learning at Gesher LaTorah

As autumn settles in and the pace of life slows after the flurry of Yomim Tovim (holidays), we at Gesher LaTorah are taking a moment to reflect on the beautiful beginning of our school year. Gesher LaTorah is a warm and welcoming community school for children and adults with significant disabilities, and this fall has been filled with meaningful growth, celebration, and connection.

Our students embraced the excitement of returning to school, renewing friendships, and experiencing hands-on holiday learning. Our students returned to their community of peers and teachers, ready to learn and to celebrate together. For many adults with disabilities, opportunities for Jewish learning can be scarce once they are no longer in a traditional school setting—even though, across the broader community, adults often find countless shiurim (Torah classes) and learning opportunities leading up to the holidays. At Gesher LaTorah, we strive to be that place of learning and belonging for individuals with disabilities.

Throughout the chagim (holidays), our students engaged with each holiday in meaningful and accessible ways—listening to the shofar for Rosh Hashanah, exploring themes of teshuvah before Yom Kippur, creating decorations for the sukkah, and dancing joyfully with the Torah on Simchat Torah. Each experience was adapted to meet our students where they are, ensuring that everyone could take part in the joy and richness of our tradition.

Now, as the holiday season gives way to the steady rhythm of the school year, we are filled with gratitude—for our students, for their families, and for the privilege of being a place where every individual is valued, celebrated, and inspired to keep learning.

May the spirit and joy of the chagim continue to carry us through the year ahead!
