Keep Recharging

Written By: Rabbi Aaron Levitt

Summer seems to go by very quickly, doesn’t it? Didn’t we just finish the last school year? I guess it’s true: time flies when you’re having fun.

The truth is that summer is a very busy time for schools. Just think about all that has to get done to prepare for a new school year. Hiring and onboarding new staff, ordering books and supplies, creating schedules and class lists, updating policies and curriculum, preparing classrooms and campuses, and so much more.

Hopefully, our educators, like our children, have found some time to rest and recharge over the last few weeks. Because as passionate as they are about teaching children and helping them grow up, teaching can be exhausting at times. It is crucial, not only in the summer but throughout the school year, to keep recharging and replenishing, so that we can have the energy and enthusiasm that our children need to thrive.

We all look forward to this new school year with great hope, excitement, and anticipation. We have the opportunity to inspire, lift up, and encourage each child on their path. What could be more meaningful and holy than that?

As our Sages teach (Shabbat 119b):

אֵין הָעוֹלָם מִתְקַיֵּים אֶלָּא בִּשְׁבִיל הֶבֶל תִּינוֹקוֹת שֶׁל בֵּית רַבָּן.

The world only exists because of the breath of schoolchildren.

No doubt, there will be some bumps and challenges along the way. And during those moments it is so important for parents and educators to remember that they are all on the same team. But by the end of the school year, we will be able to look at the children in our care and see their growth and development.

May this be a year of growth, of support, of joy, and of meaning. May we remember to keep recharging. And may we put everything we have into these children, so that by next summer we’re ready to recharge and start again.
