Back to School Motivation

Written By: JES Staff

After a summer of late mornings, popsicles, and unstructured play, getting kids back into school mode can feel like turning a canoe around in a slow-moving river—it takes time, patience, and a few good paddles in the right direction. Motivation doesn’t always come rushing back the moment backpacks hit the shelves—but it can be gently reignited with a little intention. Research shows that children are more motivated when they feel capable, connected to others, and when they have some choice in how they approach a task. For younger children, simple routines and a sense of excitement can work wonders—things like a countdown to the first day, letting them choose their outfit or lunchbox, or practicing the morning routine with a bit of silliness to ease the transition. For older kids and teens, it’s helpful to involve them in setting small goals, easing them back into a regular sleep schedule (we said easing, not enforcing), and giving them some say in how they get organized for the year ahead.

Of course, it’s not just kids who need a boost—parents do too. Especially when school has been a challenge, it can take effort to gear up for another year of forms, forgotten water bottles, and late-night math homework. But your outlook matters more than you think. Kids pick up on your energy, so finding your own motivation—even just remembering how good it feels to be back in a rhythm—can help set the tone. Celebrate the small wins, stay connected to other parents, and remind yourself: nobody’s expected to start the school year with everything perfectly in place. Just showing up with a bit of optimism and a fresh snack in hand is a pretty great start.
