Ask an Educator August 2025

Q: What are some of your favorite ways to foster strong teacher-student relationships early in the year?
A: The first few weeks of school are all about building connections. Before jumping into academics, I focus on making sure that every student feels seen, valued, and safe in our classroom community. I greet each student by name at the door and often kick off the day with a light “question of the day”—something fun like, “Would you rather explore space or the ocean?” or “What’s your ultimate ice cream flavor?” These little moments spark conversation and help set a positive tone.
I also make time for quick one-on-one chats to learn about students’ interests and to gently check in on those who might need a little extra encouragement to join in. My students love getting to know each other through short, low-pressure activities—like making a “three fun facts about me” card or doing a playful “find someone who…” scavenger hunt. Even small gestures, like noticing a student’s cool sneakers, pointing out an act of kindness, or sharing a bit about my own hobbies, go a long way in showing that this is a space where they belong. When students know you care about them as people, they’re much more willing to take risks, collaborate, and fully engage in learning throughout the year.
More Quick Connection Ideas:
- Have students draw a quick “self-portrait emoji” that shows how they feel that day and share it with a partner.
- Create a “Mystery Me” bag: students bring a small object that represents them, and classmates guess who it belongs to.
- Ask students to write down a “hidden talent” or surprising fact about themselves anonymously, then read them aloud for the class to guess.
